The Siop Model: A Comprehensive Guide to Effective English Language Teaching for English Learners
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model is a research-based framework for teaching English to English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream classrooms. Developed by educators and researchers at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL),the SIOP Model provides teachers with a set of principles and practices to ensure that ELLs have access to the same challenging curriculum as their native English-speaking peers, while also providing the necessary language support to help them succeed academically.
The SIOP Model is based on eight principles that guide effective English language teaching:
- Preparation: Teachers plan lessons that are aligned with students' language proficiency levels and content objectives.
- Building Background: Teachers activate students' prior knowledge and provide visual and contextual support to help them understand new concepts.
- Comprehensible Input: Teachers use clear and concise language, gestures, and visuals to ensure that students understand the content being taught.
- Strategies: Teachers explicitly teach students language learning strategies, such as using context clues, making inferences, and using cognates.
- Interaction: Teachers provide ample opportunities for students to interact with the teacher and with each other in both oral and written language.
- Practice and Application: Teachers provide students with opportunities to practice using new language skills in meaningful ways.
- Lesson Delivery: Teachers use a variety of teaching methods and techniques to engage students and make learning accessible.
- Assessment: Teachers use formative and summative assessments to monitor students' progress and make adjustments to instruction as needed.
The SIOP Model consists of eight components that provide teachers with specific guidance on how to implement the principles of the model in their classrooms:

Research has shown that the SIOP Model can improve the academic achievement of ELLs. Studies have found that students who are taught using the SIOP Model make greater gains in reading, writing, and math than students who are not taught using the model. The SIOP Model can also help to improve students' attitudes towards learning and increase their self-confidence.
The SIOP Model can be implemented in a variety of educational settings, including regular classrooms, sheltered English immersion classrooms, and bilingual classrooms. Teachers can use the SIOP Model to plan lessons, deliver instruction, and assess student learning. The model can be used with students at all levels of English proficiency, from beginners to advanced learners.
There are a variety of resources available to help teachers implement the SIOP Model in their classrooms. These resources include:
- The SIOP Model website (www.cal.org/siop)
- The SIOP Model book ( Echevarria, J., Vogt, M., & Short, D. (2017). Making content comprehensible for English learners: The SIOP Model. Boston: Pearson.)
