Pictures of Travel in Sweden Among the Hartz Mountains and in Switzerland
In the summer of 1836, the English artist William Turner embarked on a journey to Sweden, the Hartz Mountains, and Switzerland. He was accompanied by his friend and fellow artist, John Ruskin. Turner was fascinated by the scenery of these regions, and he produced a large number of sketches and paintings during his trip. Many of these works are now considered to be among his finest achievements.
Sweden
Turner's journey to Sweden began in July 1836. He traveled by boat from London to Gothenburg, and then continued overland to Stockholm. Turner was immediately struck by the beauty of the Swedish countryside, and he spent several weeks exploring the area. He visited the towns of Uppsala, Västerås, and Karlstad, and he made numerous sketches of the scenery along the way.
