The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has established two important qualifications for pilots flying in Europe: the Commercial Balloon Instrument Rating (CB IR) and the Balloon Instrument Rating (BIR). These ratings allow pilots to fly balloons in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC),which can significantly improve safety and efficiency.

Requirements for the CB IR and BIR

To obtain the CB IR, pilots must first have a Commercial Balloon Pilot Licence (CBP). They must also have at least 50 hours of balloon flight time, including 10 hours of instrument flight time. Pilots must also pass a written exam and a flight test.

To obtain the BIR, pilots must first have a Private Balloon Pilot Licence (PPL). They must also have at least 25 hours of balloon flight time, including 5 hours of instrument flight time. Pilots must also pass a written exam and a flight test.

Training for the CB IR and BIR

Training for the CB IR and BIR typically takes place at a flight school or training center. The training will cover the following topics:

  • Instrument flight procedures
  • Navigation in IMC
  • Meteorology
  • Emergency procedures

The training will also include a significant amount of practical flight time in IMC. This will allow pilots to gain the experience and confidence necessary to fly safely in instrument conditions.

Benefits of Obtaining the CB IR and BIR

There are several benefits to obtaining the CB IR and BIR. These include:

  • Increased safety: Flying in IMC can be extremely dangerous. Having an instrument rating allows pilots to fly safely in these conditions, even when visibility is poor.
  • Increased efficiency: Instrument flight can be more efficient than visual flight. This is because pilots can fly in a straight line, even when they cannot see the ground.
  • Increased opportunities: Pilots with an instrument rating can fly in a wider variety of conditions. This can open up new job opportunities and allow pilots to fly to more destinations.

The EASA CB IR and BIR are two important qualifications for pilots flying in Europe. These ratings allow pilots to fly balloons in IMC, which can significantly improve safety and efficiency. If you are a pilot who wants to fly in IMC, I encourage you to consider obtaining the CB IR or BIR.
