About the Author
Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, on February 18, 1931. She was the second of four children born to Ramah Willis and George Wofford. Morrison's father was a welder and her mother was a homemaker. The family lived in a working-class neighborhood and Morrison attended Lorain High School, where she excelled in English and drama.
After graduating from high school, Morrison attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she studied English. She graduated in 1953 and went on to teach English at Texas Southern University and Howard University. In 1964, she married Harold Morrison, a Jamaican architect. The couple had two sons, Harold Jr. and Slade.
Morrison's first novel, The Bluest Eye, was published in 1970. The novel was a critical and commercial success and it established Morrison as a major voice in American literature. Morrison went on to write nine more novels, including Sula (1973),Song of Solomon (1977),Tar Baby (1981),Beloved (1987),Jazz (1992),Paradise (1997),Love (2003),and Home (2012). She also wrote several works of non-fiction, including The Black Book (1974),Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination (1992),and Birth of a Nation'hood: Meditations on Democracy, Race, and Culture (2016).
Morrison's work has been translated into more than 20 languages and she has received numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She is considered one of the most important and influential writers of the 20th century.
