Tabei was born in Fukushima, Japan, in 1939. She began climbing mountains at a young age, and by the time she was in her early 20s, she was already an experienced mountaineer. In 1969, she joined the Japanese Women's Mountaineering Club, and in 1970, she became the first Japanese woman to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
In 1972, Tabei set her sights on Mount Everest. She was part of a Japanese expedition that attempted to climb the mountain via the South Col route. However, the expedition was unsuccessful, and Tabei was forced to turn back just short of the summit. Undeterred, Tabei returned to Everest in 1975 with a different expedition. This time, she was successful in reaching the summit, becoming the first woman to do so.
Tabei's success on Everest was a major milestone for women's mountaineering. It helped to change the way the world viewed women's abilities, and it inspired other women to pursue their own dreams of climbing mountains. Tabei continued to climb mountains throughout her life, and she became a role model for women and girls around the world.
In addition to her mountaineering accomplishments, Tabei was also a vocal advocate for women's rights and environmental protection. She served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, and she worked to promote education and opportunity for women and girls in developing countries.
Junko Tabei died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 77. She is remembered as one of the greatest mountaineers of all time, and her legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
