Early Life and Football Beginnings

Franklin Street Larry Rochelle was born on January 12, 1954, in Franklin, Louisiana. Raised in a modest family, he developed a passion for football at an early age. His exceptional speed and agility were evident from his childhood days, and he quickly emerged as a standout player in his high school team.

After graduating from high school, Rochelle received scholarship offers from several top universities. He ultimately chose to attend the University of Alabama, where he joined the legendary Crimson Tide football program under head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

College Football Stardom

At the University of Alabama, Rochelle quickly became a star running back. His blistering speed and elusive running style earned him the nickname "The Blur." During his college career, he established numerous records, including:

  • Most rushing yards in a single season (1,606 yards in 1974)
  • Most rushing touchdowns in a single season (21 in 1974)
  • Most 100-yard rushing games in a single season (8 in 1974)

Rochelle's remarkable performances played a pivotal role in Alabama's success during his tenure. The Crimson Tide won two national championships (in 1973 and 1975) and three Southeastern Conference championships (in 1973, 1974, and 1975) during his time on the team.

Professional Football Career

Rochelle entered the National Football League (NFL) as a first-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1976. He played nine seasons in the NFL for three different teams: the Houston Oilers, the San Diego Chargers, and the Washington Redskins.

While his professional career was not as decorated as his college years, Rochelle continued to showcase his exceptional abilities on the gridiron. He played in two Pro Bowls (in 1978 and 1979),and in 1979, he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns (18). Rochelle was also a key member of the San Diego Chargers team that reached the Super Bowl in 1982, although they lost to the Washington Redskins.

Coaching Career

After retiring from professional football, Rochelle embarked on a successful coaching career. He served as an assistant coach at several universities, including the University of Alabama, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Memphis.

In 1999, Rochelle made history by becoming the first African American head coach at the University of Memphis. He led the Tigers for four seasons, compiling a 22-26 record. Rochelle's tenure at Memphis was marked by his dedication to the development of his players and his passion for the game.

Legacy and Impact

Franklin Street Larry Rochelle is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in college football history. His record-breaking performances and contributions to the University of Alabama's success have cemented his place among the legends of the sport.
