The book is divided into three parts. The first part, "Violence and the Sacred in the Modern World," examines the ways in which violence has been used to create and maintain sacred spaces and objects. The essays in this section explore the role of violence in the construction of religious authority, the establishment of social order, and the creation of national identity. They also examine the ways in which violence has been used to challenge and subvert these same structures.
The second part of the book, "The Modernities of East and West," explores the different ways in which modernity has shaped the relationship between violence and the sacred. The essays in this section examine the impact of colonialism, industrialization, and urbanization on religious belief and practice. They also explore the ways in which modern technologies have been used to both promote and suppress violence.
The third part of the book, "Perspectives on Violence and the Sacred," offers a variety of perspectives on the complex relationship between violence and the sacred. The essays in this section explore the role of violence in religious ritual, the nature of sacred violence, and the ways in which violence can be used to create and destroy meaning.
