The book is divided into three parts. The first part, "Violence and the Sacred in the Modern World," examines the ways in which violence has been used to create and maintain sacred spaces and objects. The essays in this section explore the role of violence in the construction of religious authority, the establishment of social order, and the creation of national identity. They also examine the ways in which violence has been used to challenge and subvert these same structures.
