Soundings: Honoring Influential Teachers - Kavonte Carthron
Kavonte Carthron is an 11th-grade student at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet, a public magnet school in Houston, Texas. He is a passionate advocate for social justice and has dedicated his time to mentoring underrepresented and marginalized youth. 5 out of 5 Kavonte's commitment to social justice began when he was in middle school. He was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and wanted to find a way to make a difference in his community. In 2017, Kavonte founded his own mentorship program called The K.A.R.E Project. The program provides mentorship, tutoring, and college prep services to underrepresented and marginalized youth in Houston. Kavonte's work has been recognized by several organizations, including the Obama Foundation and the NAACP. He was also named one of the "25 Most Influential Teens of 2018" by Time magazine. Kavonte's story is an inspiration to us all. He is a reminder that young people can make a difference in the world. He is also a testament to the power of mentorship.
