Hamilton displayed a precocious intellect from an early age. He had a voracious appetite for books and could read and write by the age of seven. At the age of twelve, he was sent to study in New York City, where he attended King's College (now Columbia University).

Revolutionary War

In 1774, Hamilton became involved in the American Revolution. He wrote and published a series of essays supporting the cause of independence, and he helped to organize a local militia unit. In 1775, he joined the Continental Army and served as a captain under George Washington.

Hamilton quickly distinguished himself as a military commander. He fought in several key battles, including the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Saratoga. He also played a key role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.

Post-War Career

After the war, Hamilton returned to New York City and began a career in law. He quickly became one of the most successful lawyers in the city, and he also played a leading role in the drafting of the new federal Constitution.

In 1789, Hamilton was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President George Washington. As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton implemented a series of policies that helped to stabilize the nation's economy. He created the national bank, established a system of tariffs, and funded the national debt.

Hamilton's policies were controversial, but they were ultimately successful in helping to establish the United States as a financial superpower. Hamilton resigned as Secretary of the Treasury in 1795, but he remained active in politics.

Death

In 1804, Hamilton was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, the former Vice President of the United States. Burr had made disparaging remarks about Hamilton's wife, and Hamilton felt that he had no choice but to challenge him to a duel.

Hamilton was shot and killed in the duel, and he died on July 12, 1804. He was 49 years old.
